The Black & Decker MM575 Lawn Hog 18-Inch 12 amp electric mulching mower is one of Black & Decker’s mid-range electric mowers. It is the big brother of the Black & Decker MM275. Actually these two mowers are identical except for one thing – the MM575 has a 12-amp motor while the MM275 has a 9-amp motor.
The Black and Decker MM575 has mulching, discharge and bagging features although in keeping with some other Black and Decker models, the bag is optional and so is a side chute accessory. What the Black Decker MM575 does do well for an electric mower is handle thick lawns and lawns with big weeds that place a heavy demand on the machine’s mulching capacity.
Here are the specs. The MM575 has a 100-foot cord which restricts your mowing range to 100 feet from an electrical outlet. It is possible to roam around the house with the cord running in through windows here and there to reach all sides if there is not a better alternative. With the press of a single button, the cutting height can be shifted from one inch to 3.5 inches. The plastic polymer deck is 18 inches wide. The MM575 is lightweight, weighing in at 41 pounds, and great for people with small lawns and small muscles. You can zip it around your carpet of grass like you would zip a vacuum cleaner on the carpet in your house.
Here is some advice from someone who uses the Black and Decker MM575. Don’t worry too much about it getting away from you. Not only is it light but it has a dead man’s switch so that if you let it go, it stops cutting instantly. Regarding the cord, push the mower with the cord behind you. When you turn at the end of the swath you just cut, keep the cord against the back of your ankles to keep it out of the cutting path. When you are cutting the grass in strips, allow for a little overlap to keep from having a tufted line of longer grass between your cutting swathes.
A few people have grumbled about the Black Decker MM575’s handle which does not move up or down. This creates a challenge if you have to mow close to a fence or building or under and around trees. Actually if you have a lot of trees, you might be better off getting a different model.
